Als mensen mij vragen wat mijn reden is om zo bezig te zijn met Route66 dan is het belangrijkste antwoord: "de Painted Desert Trading Post".
De eerste keer dat ik hier een foto van zag was op de voorkant van het boek van Russell A. Olsen getiteld 'Route66, Lost & Found - volume 1'. De schrijver heeft allerlei oude ansichtkaarten van gebouwen en plaatsjes aan Route66 genomen en diezelfde plaatsen nu weer gefotografeerd.
Het gebied waar deze trading post staat had ik al meerdere malen bezocht maar ik had er geen idee van dat Route66 daar zo vlak langs liep en dat dit gebouw er nog stond. Bij het bekijken ervan krijg je associaties met allerlei woorden als prachtig, dramatisch, treurig en historisch en allemaal zijn ze van toepassing. Het gebouw laat goed zien hoe in een korte tijd Route 66 op kwam, floreerde en wegstierf. Veel van de oorspronkelijke route is weer aan het floreren en makkelijk te bekijken maar er zijn nog enkele plekken waar dat niet het geval is. Moeilijk te bereiken en in hoog tempo aan het verdwijnen.
Om er te komen moet je een eind de prairie in over wegen die slechts begaanbaar zijn als het weer goed is.  Als je er bent zul je zien dat er vrijwel niets over is afgezien van een ruine die herinneringen oproept naar (voor Route66) betere tijden. Op deze plek hebben duizenden mensen iets koels te drinken gevonden na een lange reis over de hete prairie. Men kon er souvenirs kopen, met mede-reizgers praten en wat eten. Nu hangt er alleen de stilte van de prairie maar de sfeer is er niet minder om!

When people ask me what brought on my interest in Route66 my main answer is  "the Painted Desert Trading Post".  The first time I saw a picture of it was when I saw the first book of Russell A. Olsen titled 'Route66, Lost & Found - volume 1'. He took a number of old postcards of buildings and towns along Route66 and made new pictures on those same locations.
We had previously been in the the area in which the Trading Post is several times but were oblivious of the fact that Route66 runs through that same area and that this building is still there in the prairie. To get there you have to take a dirt road which I would not recommend in bad weather. Once you are there you will see that all that is left is an empty shell, bringing on memories of another time when this was a busy road with thousands of travelers, thirsty after a long hot ride. They could stop here to refresh, get some food, buy souvenirs and talk to fellow travelers. All that you will find now is the silence of the prairie and, if you listen well, the soft rumbling of the trucks on the interstate a few miles away. 

De Painted desert trading post is gebouwd in 1940 door het echtpaar Dotch en Alberta Windsor en was in gebruik tot 1956 toen het gebouw is verlaten. In de hoogtijdagen zag het er zo uit: The painted desert trading post was built in 1940 by Dotch and Alberta Windsor and was used until 1956. In it's heydays it looked like this:

Route66 liet men hier letterlijk links liggen, de nieuwe I-40 ligt een paar kilometer naast de oorspronkelijke route. Daarbij is het stuk waar de Painted Desert Trading Post ligt afgesloten. Aan de oostkant kwam de route uit een dorpje en aan de westkant ging de route door het Petrified Forest State Park. Aan de kant van het dorpje is het bij de dorpsgrens afgesloten (omdat men het wegdek niet wilde onderhouden) en aan de westkant is het afgesloten omdat het een State Park is waar men toegang moet betalen. Hierdoor is de weg al snel in zwaar verval geraakt en ziet er nu zo uit: Route66 was left alone in the prairie when the new interstate was built here, approximately one mile away. This stretch of the old road is blocked off on both sides. On the eastside the road is closed so that no maintenance is required, west is closed since the road there goes through the Painted Desert National Park. Because of these closures the road has been completely abandoned and is in a very bad state:

Deze weg volg je voor ongeveer 1 kilometer regelrecht de prairie in waarna je op een kruising komt, dit is de originele route66! De satelietfoto van dit gebied laat het goed zien:

Follow this dirt road for little less than one mile after which you arrive at the crossing with the old original Route66! This satellite picture shows the local situation well:

 

De brug is nog wel begaanbaar al hebben sommige automobilisten ook daar kennelijk moeite mee gehad, getuige een paar autowrakken die hier zo te zien al vele jaren liggen.

The bridge is well accessible although some car drivers had problems crossing it, given the number of car wrecks you can see in the sand.

De trading post is in slechte staat en op de gevel zijn nog vaag de oorspronkelijke reclames gezien. Boven aan de gevel zijn ook nog vaag twee geschilderde motoren te zien, herinneringen aan de tijd dat de trading post dienst deed als bikerbar voordat hij defnitief gesloten werd en nu langzaam uit elkaar valt.

Mocht je de trading post willen bezoeken dan moet je wel snel zijn, zowel de weg als het gebouw gaan in gestaag tempo achteruit en over niet al te veel tijd zal de prairie het geheel definitief overwoekeren!

The trading post is in a bad state and well beyond repair. The original slogans on the front and the sides are still visible though and also the later added paintings of two motorcycles can be seen, reminders of the time that the post was used as a biker-bar. If you want to visit the post you might as well hurry. Both the road and the building are deteriorating badly and it will probably not be long before the prairie has reclaimed both!

The trading post and the area surrounding it were up for sale. The owner advertised with the fact that these old cars might be restored to their original state. Good luck!

Als je bij de trading post staat kun je de vrachtwagens op de interstate horen en zien. Dan moet je vanaf de interstate ook de trading post kunnen zien en inderdaad, als je weet waar je naar moet kijken lukt dat. When you are standing in front of the trading post you can hear and see the trucks on the interstate. Therefore you should be able to see the trading post from the interstate and you can, if you know where to look.
